Historical Development of Apostolate

In 1889 the Belgian Capuchins took over the Mission in the Subcontinent to evangelize, to make people Christian, to save souls and to plant the Church in Pakistan. The Capuchin Friars handed over a beautiful tradition of Ilaqa Visit (Daura) which was very help full and encouraging for the faithful. The simple faith of the people was enriched by the spiritual complement of the Friars who use to spend their time with the people.

According to the signs of the time and the requirements of the modern society the ways of serving in the pastoral life and approaches towards the people have been modified.

Sacramental Ministry

Practically all the Friars of the Voice Province are involved in the sacramental ministry to our people. The Friars in the various parishes of the Archdiocese of Lahore and the Archdiocese of Karachi are spiritually sharing and caring for the people with the sacraments: for instance the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Eucharist, Confirmation, Confession, Sacrament of the Sick, and Matrimony.  Through these sacraments they try to fulfill the spiritual needs of the faithful.

Formation as a Ministry

The first priority of the Vice Province is formation. Formation means, to form our youth who opt  to join a Capuchin Franciscan way of life, based on evangelical vows namely: poverty, chastity and obedience.

Parish Ministry

Traditional ministry of the Capuchin Friars in Pakistan is parish work. The Friars engaged in the parish ministry are working zealously in order to keep up the traditions of the old capuchin missionaries. The Friars are engaged in parish ministry at: St. Mary’s Parish Gulberg, St. Francis Parish Kot Lakhpat, St. Joseph’s Parish Lahore Cantt, Bhai Pheru Parish, Adha Parish Sialkot, St. Joseph’s Parish Sialkot city and St. James Parish Sialkot Cantt. The Friars who are serving these Parishes focus very much on the following points.

1          Visiting families

2          Administering the sacraments

3          Teaching Catechism

4          Taking care of the sick

5          Preaching conventions

6          Forming youth groups

7          Forming Healing groups

8          Preaching Retreats

9          Educational programs

Education and Teaching Ministry

Many Friars of the Vice Province are engaged in the ministry of Education and Teaching. The Vice province has many Schools in the Archdiocese in order to
educate the children of poor families, so that they may go forward in order to meet the challenges of the world. The parish schools serve the poorest among the poor in the villages and slum areas, which highlight very much the Capuchin charism and the spirit of minority.

Some Friars in the Vice Province are full time involved in the Teaching Ministry. The Capuchin Friars have contributed a lot in the teaching ministry in the minor seminary Lahore as well as in the Major seminary Karachi. Some of the friars are also giving different courses to sisters about religious life and vows. One of the friars has also taken the responsibility of faith formation program of the students of Capuchin Order’s schools.

Serving in Different Commissions of the Archdiocese of Lahore

Many Friars of the Vice Province serve in the different commissions of the Archdiocese of Lahore. These commissions are: Archdiocesan pastoral plan, Catechist’s Commission, Lenten Campaign Commission, Diocesan Projects Committee and Coordinator of Catholic Youth Ministry of the Archdiocese of Lahore.

Serving in the Field of Literature

There are some Friars in the Vice Province who are very much interested to give witness of Jesus Christ through their writings. There are Friars who have written many books and articles to promote moral values and teachings of the church. The Vice Provincial, Fr. Francis Nadeem is the Executive Secretary of the National Catholic Literature Board.

Hospital Ministry

The early Franciscan friars were enthusiastically involved in leprosy hospitals in order to serve the wounded realities. Therefore having the same charism, Friars today in the Vice Province, are also serving the sick while visiting them in the hospitals. One of the friars has been trained in physiotherapy and he has committed himself fully for this ministry. At present he is serving in Bethania Hospital Sialkot.

Different Ministries of the Vice Province

There are friars in the Vice Province who are involved in various ministries, like Justice and Peace Commission, Secular Franciscan Order, Interfaith and Inter-religious dialogue, Army Chaplaincy etc. All these ministries of the Vice Province gear towards one thing, that is: to establish the Kingdom of God.
